Otani Tomoemon VI as Kanshojo, 1927 - Wonderful kabuki portrait of Otani Tomoemon VI as Kanshojo in the classic play "Sugawara denju tenerai kagami." A prestigious "Right Minister," the nobleman is falsely accused of plotting against the prince by his rival Shihei, the "Left Minister." He stares ahead with a solemn, stoic expression, the end of his folding fan extending from beneath the sleeve of his beautiful purple court robe, which features a pattern of his crest. On sleeve is raised above his head, providing a background for his profile. The face is sensitively drawn and softly shaded. A beautifully composed and richly colored image. This fantastic design is from Shunsen's "Creative Prints, Collected Portraits of Shunsen," a series lavishly published by Watanabe in a limited edition of only 150 prints.
