Five Chivalrous Men, 1889

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene featuring the "shiranami gonin" or five men of the white waves, a gang of five street knights who are thieves. From left, the actors are Nakamura Shikan as Tadanobu Rihei, Onoe Kikugoro as Benten Kozo, Ichikawa Danjuro as Nippon Daemon, Nakamura Fukusuke as Akaboshi Juzaburo, and unidentified actor as Nango Rikimaru. The men exchange scowls and frowns as they confront each other along the edge of the water. Each carries an umbrella and wears a kimono with a fantastic pattern, including a dragon and flames, and a hawk diving. A few raindrops begin to fall, slanting across the sky. A great design with expressive figures and lively color, detailed with touches of burnishing on the robes.

Artist - Kunisada III (1848 - 1920)
