Visiting an Enemy, 1863

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of the wealthy samurai Teranishi Kanshin paying a visit to his enemy, the legendary street knight Banzui Chobei. Wearing a coat and kimono with an eerie pattern of skulls and bones, the samurai grips the hilt of his sword as he glares angrily at Chobei. The street knight kneels at left, a large knife thrust into a low wooden cutting board between the men. The interior setting is nicely detailed with curtains hanging in the doorway, and signs hung on the wall above simulated wood grain panels. From left, the actors are Kawarazaki Gonjuro IV and Nakamura Shikan IV. An intriguing subject with expressive figures.
