Commoners Fighting in the Snow, 1893

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of commoners fighting in the snow on the stone base of a statue. The fellow at left lunges forward with a large knife, grimacing with rage, while the man in the center raises his umbrella to defend himself. Another commoner at right draws back his sword as he scowls. A hand-applied spattering of white pigment simulates the snow flying as they battle. An inset at upper right shows a man bundled up against the cold weather holding up a lantern. From left, the actors are Onoe Matsusuke IV, Onoe Kikugoro V, Ichikawa Ennosuke I, and Bando Kakitsu I in the inset. A lively design with large expressive figures. Includes burnishing in the black kimono trim.
