Original Kuniteru II (1829 - 1874) Japanese Woodblock Print
Sumo Wrestlers Strolling, 1869

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of sumo wrestlers strolling through the street, a fellow at left scratching his head. He looks ahead with an alarmed expression as he carries one sword upright, another tucked at his waist. The wrestler behind him carries a large bundle wrapped in cloth over his shoulder. Behind them, workers are busy moving casks of sake from a stack along the embankment, rolling the straw-wrapped barrels down the street. Warehouses can be seen along the opposite side of the river, and a few cranes fly overhead. A handsome design with a nicely detailed setting.

Artist - Kuniteru II (1829 - 1874)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 18 3/4"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Two separate panels. A few wormholes and tiny holes, thinning spot, slight thinning at edge, repaired. Slight toning, soiling, and creasing, a few small spots. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
