Swordfight during a Flood, 1865

Comments - Fantastic kabuki scene of a beauty fighting a rogue atop the roof of a house during a flood. Leaning back on the thatched roof, she thrusts her sword forward with a determined smile, her long hair flowing over her back. Her attacker raises his own weapon high above his head, frowning angrily. Undulating water swirls beneath the eaves of the structure, while a left, a man clings to a signpost, watching helplessly. A crescent moon glows in the evening sky above. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Kuzo III as Wakato Shinkichi, Sawamura Tanosuke III as the older daughter Kakezara, and Nakamura Shikan IV as Tenmoku Sunosuke. A fascinating subject, wonderfully colored and detailed. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
