Series; Famous Places in the Eastern Capital

Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.

Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.

First Cuckoo of the New Year at Tsukudajima - Wonderful design of evening falling at Tsukuda Island. The first cuckoo of the New Year flies across the darkening sky past a slender crescent moon, considered an omen of good luck. The tall masts in the foreground add a nice sense of dimension to the scene. Lovely color and shading. Printed on tan paper to simulate an aged appearance.

Artist - Hiroshige (1797 - 1858)

Image Size - 8 1/2" x 14" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Small paper remnant on reverse at top edge from original publisher mounting. A couple small creases at edges. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
