Kumawakamaru Waiting in the Snow, circa 1842 - 1843

Comments - Handsome portrait of Kumawakamaru, the son of Dainagon Suketomo, standing in the snow outside a garden gate. Suspected of a conspiracy against the emperor, the imperial court exiled Kumawakamaru's father to the island of Sado and ordered his execution by the lay monk Homma. The young boy made his way to the island, but Homma prevented him from seeing his father before his death. For revenge, Kumawakamaru killed Homma one night before escaping. He is shown here as he travels, carrying a walking stick and a hat, the wind ruffling his straw raincoat and elegant robe. A large wicker trunk is strapped to his back and cloth parcels hang across his chest. Snow falls heavily against the night sky, blanketing the fence below. A terrific design, beautifully detailed.
