Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Viewing Peonies at Night, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Charming scene of the young Mitsuuji, the Rustic or Country Genji, viewing peonies at night. He grins happily as he looks back at the young princess at right, who shyly holds her sleeve to her chin as she sweetly smiles. Her kimono is shaded from red to pink and patterned with floral motifs, tied with a brown print obi. At left, a kneeling matron holds a lantern while a young page behind her carries the nobleman's sword. Colorful oversize peony blossoms fills the background, with a pair of butterflies fluttering overhead. A lovely design with fine line work in the hair, bokashi shading in the night sky, and handsome wood grain impression in the background. A terrific design, also in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
