Large Wind-up Automaton of Asahina Saburo, circa 1847 - 1848

Comments - Intriguing depiction of a large wind-up automaton of the samurai Asahina Saburo. Small figures swarm all over the giant doll, with a group of men at upper right pounding on his shoulder with wooden mallets. A dancer performs on his extended finger at right, while on the pipe at left, a Chinese general rides a white horse accompanied by retainers with flags and fans. At bottom left, a man climbs to the top of the heel, where another fellow is looking through at telescope. A fascinating subject with the tiny figures dwarfed by the huge sculpture.
