Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Fighting in a Courtyard, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Intriguing scene of a young samurai and a beauty battling a rogue in the center of a castle courtyard. Grimacing angrily, the rogue clashes blades with the young samurai at left while pushing away the beauty at right, who holds her sword between both hands. At left, a samurai with the sleeves of his blue kimono tied back draws his sword, ready to join the fight. At right, an older samurai sitting on a stool scowls as he watches, a servant squatting beside him and a man in a plain gray kimono kneeling on the ground nearby. Tall stone walls enclose the grassy space, with colorful autumn maple leaves framing the sky, a warm glow spreading along the horizon as the sun sets. A striking design, beautifully composed, with a handsome setting.
