Poet Saigu no Nyogo

Series; Moral Teaching for Young Girls Mirrored in the Thirty-six Poets, circa 1843

Poet Saigu no Nyogo - Lovely design from a charming and rare series pairing beauties with famous poems. Combining the portraits with poetry and moral teachings was a clever way to avoid the ban on prints of beautiful women that was in effect when the print was published. Here, a beauty sits next to a koto, her elegant kimono flowing onto the floor around her. Her outer robe is patterned with fans and waterwheels, and her hair is adorned with floral ornaments and many ribbons. The verse at upper left is by the poet Saigu no Nyogo, also known as Kishi Joo, a tenth-century Imperial princess. A beautifully colored, clean print.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14 3/8" x 9 7/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Small paper remnant on reverse at top edge from previous mounting. Light horizontal folds. A few creases. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
