Escape of Minamoto no Yoshitsune in the Great Battle at Mt. Yoshino in Yamato Province

Comments - Incredible winter battle scene of Minamoto no Yoshitsune's troops fighting against warrior monks at Yoshino Temple on Mt. Yoshino. At upper right, the famed samurai Sato Tadanobu leaps off a pagoda to do battle with Yokawa Kakuhan. He has disguised himself by wearing Yoshitsune's armor, allowing his master to escape safely. Gripping his sword upright, he falls through the air towards his enemies. In the foreground below, samurai fight off the approaching monks with naginata, while archers behind them fire. At top center, a monk tumbles head-over-heels down the snowy hillside. At far lower left, Yoshitsune and his loyal warrior monk Benkei watch from a grassy slop on the far side of a river. A dramatic composition with wonderful detail and a terrific mountain setting. A great subject for a samurai enthusiast.
