Nagoya Sanza and Fuwa Banzaemon Meeting in the Yoshiwara, 1861

Comments - Great kabuki double portrait of the sworn enemies Nagoya Sanza and Fuwa Banzaemon meeting in the Yoshiwara one night when their scabbards accidentally brush. At left, Sanza lifts his hat with a solemn frown as he recognizes the samurai who caused his downfall. He wears a blue kimono patterned with his trademark swallows flying in rain. At right, Banzaemon glares down at the ronin with a tight-lipped frown, lifting his hat for a better view. His matching coat and kimono feature swirling thunderclouds and red lightning bolts. A few cherry blossoms petals drift down through the evening sky, with teahouses visible in the distance. Nicely composed and detailed.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 3/8" x 9 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Backed with paper. Slight soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
