Comments - Terrific design of the Meiji Emperor and Empress attending the opening Noh performance at the Koyokan Theatre. The royal couple sits in a pair of elegant red plush armchairs with a table of refreshments in between them, accompanied by ladies-in-waiting dressed in colorful robes. Onstage, actors appear in the roles of the elderly couple Jo and Uba, who are the spirits of the paired pine trees, Takasago and Suminoe, in the classic Noh play "Takasago." Musicians line the back of the stage, playing drums and flute, and pine trees are pictured on the backdrop. An intriguing and unusual subject showing both the Noh performers onstage and members of the audience.
