Ryogoku Bridge at Night, 1866

Comments - Fantastic kabuki triptych depicting three actors enjoying an evening stroll with Ryogoku Bridge silhouetted in black in the background. The beauty at left smiles happily at her companions, holding a large fan patterned with flowers. The man in the center looks up with an unhappy expression as he slowly takes a toothpick from his mouth. He wears a gray plaid kimono, a white towel draped over his shoulder. The fellow at right grins slyly as he looks out of the corners of his eyes, fanning himself with a pink folding fan. His blue and white cotton kimono features a bold design of spirals, tied with a striped green obi. The bridge is crowded with pedestrians out for the night, the river below filled with boats. From left, the actors are Sawamura Tanosuke III, Kawarazaki Gonjuro I, and Ichimura Kakitsu IV. A beautiful image with the bridge providing a striking backdrop for the large expressive figures. Wonderful detail and fine bokashi shading in this terrific image.
