Ghost Seeking Revenge, 1875

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of the bloodied ghost of a priest seeking revenge. At left, he leans forward with an awful grimace, his lips blue and his face shaded lavender, a sign that he is dead. In the center, a samurai raises his sword to strike the apparition, frowning angrily. He wears a black kimono with a beautiful burnished geometric pattern tucked into blue and white striped pants. A separate scene at right depicts a courtesan looking over her shoulder as she adjusts a hairpin, a roll of tissues caught between her teeth. She wears a purple kimono edged with flowers and autumn grasses over a red under robe. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro V, Ichikawa Sadanji I, and Sawamura Tossho II. A great supernatural image.
