Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Kagoshima Sea Bream

Comments - Fantastic illustration of a sea bream from Kagoshima, with red lines pointing to various parts of the fish's body and singing their praises. Sea bream are generally considered auspicious in Japan, and Ebisu, one of the famous Seven Lucky Gods, is often depicted with one under his arm. In Kagoshima, a traditional toy is a pull-toy in the shape of a sea bream. According to legend, the origins come from the Umisachi-Yamasachi myth about Prince Yamasachi, who once removed a fish hook from the throat of a sea bream while visiting the god of the ocean's underwater palace. A beautiful bold image, with the fish about to leap from the page as it churns up white foam atop the waves.
