Elderly Mother and Rival Sons, 1861 - Interesting scene inside a rather shabby house of an elderly mother and her two sons, who are rivals. Her son Yokozo lies on the floor at right with his feet beneath a kotasu, a wooden frame over a brazier covered with a quilt to keep in the heat. He grimaces angrily as he stares at his brother, Jihizo, who scratches his head in a puzzled manner. The mother Mikuki looks distraught. A samurai and his servant stand in the snow outside the door at left. The actors include Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Jihizo and Nakamura Shikan IV as Yokozo. Nice expressive figures with a handsomely detailed setting.
