Hunting Fireflies, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Charming summer scene of beauties and young girls hunting fireflies along the shore of a large garden pond. In the center a young girls hops on one foot as she tries to swat one of the glowing insects with her fan. The beauty standing beside her has a fan with an actor's portrait on it tied to the end of a bamboo pole. At right, a kneeling woman gestures for her companion to open the insect cage as she has trapped a firefly beneath her fan. On the bank behind them at right, a group of young boys has gathered to light fireworks, watching as they explode in the night sky. A terrific depiction of favorite summertime activities. We've never come across this subject before.
