Series; The Relations of the Five Elements Represented in Hit Plays, 1858

The Relations of the Five Elements Represented in Hit Plays - Handsome portrait from a series by Toyokuni III paring the "Five Elements" with kabuki actors in character. Each role is that of a commoner or rogue, shown on a street at night. The buildings lining the road in the background are silhouetted in black against the gray night sky, providing ominous settings for the figures. Nicely architectural detail and expressive figures, with fine bokashi shading in the background and a dusting of mica across the top. A great kabuki design from this rarely seen series, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 9 3/8" + top margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. A few wormholes, repaired. Slight toning, soiling, and creasing. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
