The Great Battle of Kurikaradani

Comments - Fantastic illustration of the Battle of Kurikaradani in 1183 between the Minamoto and Taira clans. In the center, the woman warrior Tomoe gozen gallops ahead on a dappled horse, deftly using her naginata to unseat an enemy rider. Other samurai on foot clash with swords and spears. At right, a warrior with a short sword clenched between his teeth straddles a fallen opponent while simultaneously tossing another enemy over his shoulder. In the distance at upper left, Minamoto no Yoshinaka and his men have tied flaming torches to the horns of oxen and stampeded them into a division of Taira caught between mountain passes. Many Taira warriors were trampled or knocked onto the rocky cliffs below, while others became lost attempting to retreat, meeting their deaths at the hands of the waiting Minamoto samurai. A terrific depiction of this legendary battle, with wonderful detail in the figures and setting.
