Comments - Fantastic illustration of the kabuki actor Ichikawa Udanji I arriving at the Shintomi-za in Tokyo on May 23rd, 1882. He walks through the crowded street accompanied by men carrying lanterns and trying to clear the way, followed closely by a mob of people. At lower center and right, men in matching blue violet kimono with white stripes and red over the shoulders try to hold back the throng of adoring fans trying to get close to the celebrity. The theater stretches across the background, with people watching out the upper story windows. Ichikawa Udanji I was a big star on the Osaka stage, so his visit to Tokyo must have been an exciting event. A terrific, lively street scene of a Meiji event, wonderfully capturing the enthusiasm and energy of the crowd. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. We've never come across this subject before.
