Series; A Chronicle of the Subjugation of Kagoshima in Satsuma Province
The Death of Murata Sansuke, circa 1877 - Dramatic depiction of the death of the samurai Murata Sansuke in Kagoshima during the Satsuma Rebellion. At left, a comrade helps him to sit up as blood pours from his chest wound, the victim grimacing with pain. Another rebel hurries to assist him, rushing past a fallen horse wearing a red military jacket and tall black boots. On horseback at upper left, Shinohara Kunimoto looks back over his shoulder as his horse rears, clouds of smoke billowing up from the battlefield in front of a castle. At upper right, Saigo Takamori, the leader of the rebels, looks ahead stoically from astride his horse, wearing a purple jacket and holding his sword upright. Other samurai lie dead or dying across the ground, their blood soaking into the earth. A sober look at the grim reality of this historic conflict.
