The Night Attack at Horikawa, 1852

Comments - Handsome scene from the night attack at Horikawa Palace of Yoshitsune's loyal retainer Benkei bringing the captive Tosa-bo Shoshun before his master and the Lady Shizuka Gozen at Horikawa Palace. Minamoto no Yoritomo, believing that his brother Yoshitsune was a traitor to him, sent the warrior Tosa-bo Shoshun and a force of men to attack Yoshitsune's mansion, the Horikawa Palace. Yoshitsune sits on a fur skin at right, watching with a solemn expression as his mistress Lady Shizuka, kneels beside him, dressed in armor with a quiver of arrows at her back. Benkei glares angrily at the attacker, gripping him by the back of the neck as he cries out in pain. The warrior monk wears a fine suit of armor and a tall black court cap, a small arsenal of weapons at his back, including a saw, an axe, and a mallet. Several warriors are gathered around, including one waiting beside a horse beneath a pine tree at left. Nicely detailed with expressive figures. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, has this image in its collection.
