Lord Genji's Excursion to the Fuji-view Retreat, 1864

Comments - Attractive scene of Prince Genji paying a visit to his Fuji-view retreat. He stands in the center, grinning as he looks over his shoulder, wearing a blue coat patterned with butterflies over a green kimono with a white bamboo design. The two beauties kneeling at left look up at him with eager smiles, while the third woman at left takes a shoji panel from the round window over looking a pond with blossoming plum trees and a stone lantern along the shore. The window frames a lovely view of Mt. Fuji in the distance, with low-lying clouds drifting around the base. The room is beautifully decorated with a folding screen painted with cranes, with a floral ornament with ribbons hanging overhead, and a shelf holding books and a lacquer box. At right, the verandah opens onto to the garden, with women crossing a stone bridge and a blossoming plum tree. A handsome image with a wonderfully detailed setting, also in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
