Crossing the Oi River with Platforms, 1863 - Fantastic design by Hiroshige II commemorating the journey of the Shogun from Edo to Kyoto in 1863 to pay his respects to the Emperor. The Shogun's power was in decline at the time, and the procession had not been made for many years, so this was an important event. Here, the procession crosses the Oi River riding on platforms carried by teams of porters, with tall standards rising overhead. A few samurai ride on the shoulders of laborers as they wade through the waist deep, rippling water. Mt. Fuji rises majestically in the center beyond low green mountains. Beautiful jewel-tone color in this attractive scene of this historic event. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
