Meiji Emperor and Empress Riding in a Carriage, 1890

Comments - Handsome scene of the Meiji Emperor and Empress riding in the royal carriage, accompanied by soldiers walking alongside. The emperor wears a military uniform while his wife is dressed in the latest Western fashions. The ornate vehicle is decorated with a row of golden paulownia leaves and topped with a golden phoenix. At upper left, crowds watch from the upper story of a shrine above blossoming cherry trees. Wonderful detail and color.
