Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Felicitations to Genji on the Occasion of the Shichi-Go-San Celebration, 1867

Comments - Attractive depiction of Prince Genji and his three children celebrating Shichi-Go-San. Literally "Seven-Five-Three," Shichi-Go-San is a holiday celebrating the health and growth of children who are ages seven, five, and three. Here, the nobleman grins happily as he watches two ladies-in-waiting leading in a young princess by the hand at left. At right, another woman carries a toddler on her shoulder while Genji's son kneels on the floor nearby. In the center, elegant black lacquer trays hold a blossoming bonsai plum tree, graduated sake cups, and special objects. A folding screen across the back of the room features a landscape of pines, plum trees, and bamboo along a river, the trio known as the "three friends of winter." A charming design and a nice subject for anyone interested in traditional Japanese holidays. Includes faint embossing in the white kimono trim. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, has this image in its collection.
