Comments - Rather gory depiction from the Satsuma Rebellion of the Imperial Army battling with rebel samurai in Kagoshima. In the center, a soldier on horseback falls to the side clutching a wound to his chest with blood pouring onto the ground below. A rebel rushes to help him as he turns his head, his blue face and lips heralding his death. At left, a samurai falls backwards gripping his sword with both hands, a soldier ready to club him with his gun, while another wounded man has slumped over the carriage of a cannon. The battle continues on the opposite shore of a river, clouds of gray smoke rising into the dark sky. Detailed with burnishing in the black uniforms. A dramatic image, also in the collection of the British Museum has this image in its collection.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 27 1/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
