Comments - Incredible scene of the ghosts of Taira no Tomomori and his fallen warriors rising up out of the sea to attack Minamoto no Yoshitsune's ship as he crosses the sea at Daimotsu Bay. After his defeat by the Minamoto at the Battle of Dan-no-ura, Tomomori committed suicide by tying himself to an anchor and leaping into the sea, vowing revenge. Here, the spirit has created a raging storm, rain slanting across the sky and waves rolling and crashing. The ghastly, blue-faced spirits approach on their own boats, emerging from the raging water and heading straight for Yoshitsune's men. In the center, Tomomori directs his ghostly troops, the spirits brandishing swords and spears. In the front of the Minamoto ship, the warrior monk Benkei holds up his prayer beads, seeking to vanquish the ghosts, while another samurai thrusts out his sword to attack. A dramatic illustration of this great samurai legend, with wonderful detail.
