Ichikawa Ebizo V as Banzui Chobei, 1838

Comments - Great kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Ebizo V as the famous otokodate or street knight Banzui Chobei watching a fight taking place after his palanquin has stopped at Suzu-ga-Mori outside Edo. A gang had attacked a young man traveling in another palanquin, the outlaw Shirai Gonpachi, whom they wanted to capture for the reward. Here, Chobei leans out of the conveyance, his arms folded across his chest as he looks on with a frown, his brows slightly furrowed. One of the bearers sprawls on the ground at lower right, while an attacker raises a stick as a club behind him. A lively scene.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 8 3/4"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Small thinning spot, repaired. Creasing, slight toning and soiling, slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
