Revealing a Princess as a Fox, 1888

Comments - Terrific kabuki play taking place in China of a warrior revealing the true nature of a princess in a mirror, which reflects her as a fox or wolf. With his other hand he grips a sword behind his back, ready to attack if needed. The beauty frowns back at him, raising her sleeve to hide her face. At right, a bearded nobleman draws his sword, staring intently at the shape-shifting creature before him. He wears an elegant yellow robe patterned with a dragon, and an interesting headdress. Behind them, oversize peonies blossom against the deep blue night sky. From left, the actors are Takasagoya Fukusuke, Onoe Kikugoro V, and Bando Kakitsu I. A lively design with expressive figures, vibrant color, and wonderful detail in the exotic Chinese robes and architectural setting. Includes a burnished design in the black trim of the warrior's robe, and burnishing in the black lacquer frames on the wall panels.
