Series: The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, 1852

Oyamura, between Otsu and Kyoto: Bando Hikosaburo III as Kan Shojo - Terrific portrait of Bando Hikosaburo III as Kan Shojo, an Imperial Minister in the play "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami." He looks down with a glum expression as he faces arrest on false charges of attempting to seize power, a plot hatched by his rival Shihei. He wears a voluminous black court robe and holds his tall court cap in his hands. His hair is pulled into a neat topknot tied with brown cord, and his red under robe features a delicately embossed white collar. The title cartouche at upper right is framed by brushes, paper, and a scroll, references to Kan Shojo's status as a master calligrapher at court. A wonderfully expressive, poignant portrait, with a beautiful burnished scroll pattern in the black robe.
