Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Both Kirare Yosa and Yahan Chusuke, 1856 - Terrific scene from the kabuki play "Yowa Nasake Ukina no Yokoguchi," the true story of a dissolute merchant's son named Yosaburo, who was captured during a tryst with a gang boss's mistress, Otomi, and slashed all over. Dishonored, the scarred young man becomes a petty criminal, assisted by Yasu the Bat, named for the bat-shaped tattoo on his face. His nickname "Kirare Yosa" means "Scar Yosa." This scene features Ichikawa Danjuro VIII and Ichikawa Kodanji IV in the roles of Yosaburo and Yoruhan Chusuke. The young man stands outside the entrance to a home, the distraught older man offering him a small package. The still-life inset above by Gengyo Miyagi includes a bat in reference to the character of Yasu the Bat. A great subject, finely detailed.
