The Great Battle of Our Second Army near Newchwang, 1894 - Dramatic battle scene from the Sino-Japanese War of the Japanese Second Army attacking the Chinese near Newchwang. At left, a soldier grips his gun like a club as an enemy lunges at him with a spear, another foe lying lifeless in the snow nearby. At right, a Chinese warrior aims his gun while a compatriot sounds an alarm on a gong. Snow falls heavily over the night sky, and the entrance gate to a fortress can be seen in the distance at right beyond the water. A lively scene, detailed with burnishing in the black uniforms.
