Comments - Fantastic depiction of the ghosts of Taira no Tomomori and his fallen warriors rising up out of the sea to sink Minamoto no Yoshitsune's ship as he crosses the sea at Daimotsu Bay. The ghastly spirits emerge from the water at left, with Tomomori gripping his naginata amidst supernatural flames. The figures bob along the undulating water, with a wave of skull-like creatures threatening to swamp the ship as a violent storm arises. Yoshitsune leans over the edge of the boat with his sword drawn, while an archer draws his bow in the prow of the ship. An incredible design with a masterful composition and wonderful detail. A great image of this legendary tale, also in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
