The Hour of the Ox, 1870

Series; The Twelve Hours in the Modern World

The Hour of the Ox, 1870 - Terrific scene of a courtesan finally ready to retire for the evening at the Hour of the Ox, from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. She sits on a bed removing the hairpins from her elegant hairstyle, handing them to her young attendant, who reaches up eagerly to take them. The inset above shows beauties returning home for the night, an elderly servant lighting a lantern in the hallway outside. A charming design with vibrant color and embossed detail in the white kimono collars. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this series in its collection. A very attractive subject.
