Series; The Seven Lucky Gods Depicted as Merchants

Benten, 1866 - Intriguing portrait of a beauty as the Goddess Benten, from an unusual Kunichika series depicting the Seven Lucky Gods as merchants or shopkeepers. The beauty looks up with a smile as she adjusts a hairpin, leaning over a stack of boxes. Each container features an attractive scene on the front, including beauties picking tea leaves, a view of a harbor, and a blossoming plum tree. Her purple kimono has insets of colorful patterned fabrics, worn over a red under robe with a tie-dyed collar and tied with a red floral obi that reverses to black. An inset at upper left shows covered jars. An attractive design we've never seen before.
