The Fall of Fenghuangcheng: Putting the Enemy to Rout, 1894

Comments - Fantastic illustration from the fall of Fenghuangcheng during the Sino-Japanese War. A Japanese crew mans a cannon in the foreground, one soldier using a sponge to clean the barrel prior to loading it again. Clouds of smoke drift across the ground and fallen Chinese can be seen at left and right. The battle rages behind them as the Japanese confront the enemy face-to-face, one man gripping his gun over his head as a club. Includes burnishing in the black uniform of the officer looking through binoculars at right. A fascinating image with fine detail and an atmospheric setting. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A great choice for a student of military history.
