Our Second Army Occupying the Battery at Motianling, 1894

Comments - Dramatic scene from the Sino-Japanese War of Japan's Second Army overtaking the battery at Motianling. In the center, a Japanese soldier fires a gun at an enemy at right, who tumbles to the ground. The officer next to him grabs a Chinese man by the pigtail, wrenching him backwards, the parcel on his back breaking apart. Fighting continues on the ramparts at left, a few shells bursting in the sky above. At right, Japanese troops are ferried to the shore in small boats. Trees and mountains are silhouetted in gray against the night sky, clouds drifting past the full moon above. A dynamic design, one we haven't come across before.
