Yoshikado and Iga Jutaro watch Toad Battle

From a Kuniyoshi Estate Collection

Yoshikado and Iga Jutaro watch Toad Battle - Fantastic scene of the warrior Shogun Taro Yoshikado watching with Iga Jutaro as a field of toad's battle one another, two standing in a sumo-like pose in the left panel. A toad behind the wrestling pair holds a leaf, like the fan of a sumo judge. Behind the samurai, a group of giant toads are rendered in shades of gray, leering and grimacing in a haunting display of toad magic. Wonderfully detailed. A great subject from Japanese folklore.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 19 3/4" x 14 1/8"

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Two separate panels. Partially backed with old paper. Some light creases. Some minor soiling or toning at edges. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
