From a Kuniyoshi Estate Collection

Empress Jingu Invades Korea, circa 1839 - 1841 - Fantastic triptych depicting the legendary Empress Jingu and her troops invading Korea in the third century. She appears in full armor on a dappled horse at right, galloping down a rocky hillside surrounded by retainers brandishing weapons. Her minister Takeshiuchi-no-sukune leads the attack on his black horse as samurai fight all around him, engaging the Korean soldiers. Japanese ships can be seen in the harbor below, with the craggy peaks of the distant shore providing a dramatic setting. A terrific illustration of this famous tale.
