Nakamura Tanosuke III as Ohatsu, 1865 - Great kabuki portrait from the play "Momochidori Sakigake Soga" of Nakamura Tanosuke III as Ohatsu, the loyal maid who avenges the death of her mistress, the lady-in-waiting Onoe. The evil lady-in-waiting Iwafuji replaced a valuable statue in the care of Onoe with a zori sandal in hopes of dishonoring her, causing Onoe to commit suicide. Here, Ohatsu grits her teeth as she attacks Iwafuji in the palace garden one knight, pushing away the matron's umbrella. She wears a striped outer robe over an intricately patterned kimono, her hair pulled back into a ponytail falling over her shoulder. Cherry blossoms frame the night sky above. A bold design, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
