Cherry Blossoms at Genji's Rokujo Mansion, 1854

Comments - Beautiful spring scene from the "Wakana" chapter of the famous "Tale of Genji," which takes place at Genji's Rokujo mansion. At right, Genji's wife, the Third Princess, stands on a verandah overlooking a lovely garden filled with blossoming cherry trees. The beauty was supposed to stay hidden in her private quarters, but she has followed her curious kitten outside. She smiles shyly, holding her kimono sleeve to her mouth as she looks down at the young nobleman Kashiwagi, who is playing a game of football with two companions. He frowns unhappily as he spies the princess, seeing her just long enough to fall madly in love with her. She wears an elegant kimono patterned with large flowers, and her cat has a red bow and a bell around its neck. Wonderful embossed detail in the cat's fur and the white kimono trim, and beautiful shading in the water and sky. A lovely triptych. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
