Series; One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets in Eastern Brocade, 1775

One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets in Eastern Brocade - Masterful illustration by the ukiyo-e artist Katsukawa Shunsho from the book " One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets in Eastern Brocade," published in Edo in 1775. A popular subject for Japanese woodblock print artists, "One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets" is a famous anthology of classical Japanese waka poems collected in the thirteenth century by the poet and calligrapher Fujiwara no Teika. Each portrait features a poet in court attire with his or her verse in elegant calligraphy by Sayama Chikayuki. Each facial expression is carefully detailed, and some of the poets hold objects such as folding fans or prayer beads. The "Brocade" in the title refers to full color prints, which were newly popular at the time and known as nishiki-e, while "Eastern" refers to Edo, the Eastern Capital. A great early Edo representation of these renowned poets and their poems.

Only paths to grief.
Even here deep in the hills
I hear the wild deer crying.
