Original Ginko (active 1874 - 1897) Japanese Woodblock Print
Kabayama, the Head of the Naval Commanding Staff, onboard Seikyomaru, Attacks Enemy Ships, 1894

Comments - Bold depiction of the Japanese warship Seikyomaru attacking the enemy during the Sino-Japanese War. Naval Commander Kabayama leads the attack from atop the deck, waving his sword high as sailors kneeling beside him fire shots. A Chinese ship at right capsizes, sinking into the turbulent sea as sailors are thrown about. Orange flames and smoke pour from another vessel that has been hit at center, the masts tilting as the ship lists. At left, men on a lower deck fire cannons at the enemies while shots explode overhead. A dramatic design filled with energy. Wonderfully detailed fine shading and touches of burnishing. Also in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
