Original Edo era Japanese Woodblock Print
Gathering for a Lecture

Comments - Intriguing four-panel scene of people gathered around a man sitting atop a platform in the center of the room. He reads from an open book on the low desk before him, grimacing angrily, a teakettle patterned with a spider web on a warmer beside him. A few members of his audience appear to be paying attention, while others look bored, smoking pipes and chatting amongst themselves. On the floor right before the lecturer, one man takes a nap with his hand covering his eyes. A monk studies a scroll on a lacquer stand before him at left, and banners wave above the assembled crowd. An interesting caricature or satiric subject.
