Confrontation at a Shrine

Comments - Interesting kabuki triptych of a confrontation between a samurai and a street knight outside a shrine building. The samurai draws his sword as he frowns grimly at the commoner, who turns his head away, pushing up the sleeve of his red under robe. He wears a black kimono with a pattern of flowers in diamond shapes, a shakuhachi flute visible at his back. A courtesan watches warily from the left, dressed in a red kimono with a peony blossom design. Flowering cherry trees frame the scene overhead. A nice design with large figures and vibrant color.

Artist - Kunisada III (1848 - 1920)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 28 1/4" + margins as shown
