Kumagai and Atsumori at the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani

Comments - Terrific depiction of the Minamoto general Kumagai Jiro Naozane about to capture the young Taira prince Atsumori during the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani. The pink-faced Kumagai gallops after him on a black horse, leaning forward as he grips the purple and white striped reins. At left, Atsumori waves his folding fan at his enemy, seemingly unalarmed by his fate. He wears a pink and white tunic patterned with the Taira butterfly crest over his suit of armor, his hair falling loosely over his shoulders. Another samurai at right looks up at Kumagai with a keen expression, gripping the scabbard of his sword. A great image from this famous tale with large colorful figures set off by a deep blue violet background, detailed with burnishing in the black horse.
